Comparative toxicological characteristics of aluminum micro- and nanoforms with the single intratracheal administration

Brief summary

The goal of the work was to study the toxic properties of aluminum in micro- and nanoscale forms with the single intake through the respiratory tract. The aluminum used was two types of powders with an average particle size of 2.4 microns and 82.3 nm. The powders were injected to white outbred rats under a general anesthesia. The exposure effectiveness was evaluated by the cytotoxicity manifestations, as well as by the clinical picture and the complex of integrated indicators, including histological studies. Aluminum in both dispersion forms showed cytotoxic properties and also caused the decrease in the pain sensitivity threshold (after 1 day) and relative lung mass (after 14 days) in experimental animals. Along with this, the introduction of metal nanoparticles was accompanied by the decrease in body weight, motor activity, and persistent tachycardia. Destructive processes took place only in the lung tissue and adjacent lymph nodes. In general, aluminum in the nanoform, in comparison with its microform, had a more pronounced toxic effect on the organism of laboratory animals.
