Experimental substantiation of the tentatively safe level of diethyl disulfide in the air of the working area and the atmospheric air of populated areas

Brief summary

Introduction. Disulfide oil is a mixture of dialkyl disulfides (dimethyl disulfide, diethyl disulfide, methyl ethyl disulfide) resulting from the purification of hydrocarbon feedstock from mercaptans. Every year, tens of thousands of tons of disulfide oil are formed, the toxicity and danger of which have not been fully studied. Materials and methods. Studies of the effects of diethyl disulfide were carried out in non-linear animals (rats and mice). The toxic properties of diethyl disulfide were studied under the conditions of single and repeated exposure to the intragastric, intraperitoneal, inhalation and cutaneous routes of entry into the body. Results. Based on the studies carried out, the toxicometric parameters of disulfide oil were established. Mean lethal dose for intragastric administration LD50 = 428?142 mg/kg, mean lethal concentration CL50 - 4500?59 mg/m3, coefficient of possible inhalation poisoning KVIOac=23, single inhalation action threshold (Limac) - 50 mg/m3, acute action zone Zac u003d 90, cumulation coefficient -u003e 5. Disulfide oil does not have a skin-resorptive effect, but has a moderately pronounced irritant effect on the mucous membrane of the eyes. Conclusion. The data obtained indicate that disulfide oil is a substance that poses a moderate hazard with a single intragastric, inhalation and skin routes of entry into the body, and has a weak ability to accumulate. Based on the analysis of literature data, the results of experimental studies and mathematical forecasting, a value of 1.5 mg/m3 is recommended as an approximate safe level of exposure in the air of the working area, and 0.03 mg/m3 in the atmospheric air of urban and rural settlements.
