The phenomenon of the "obesity paradox" in people with cardiovascular diseases

Brief summary

Obesity is a big problem of humanity, haunting people for centuries. It is associated with deterioration of the body's condition and problems, including endocrinological and oncological ones. Every year the risk of mortality increases, especially in combination with metabolic damage to the body. However, since the XX century there have been publications and articles claiming that people with obesity and concomitant disease have lower mortality than those with reduced weight. In this regard, the term "obesity paradox" appeared. This article presents an overview of materials in the world medical literature devoted to this phenomenon, highlights medical theories, errors and studies that occur when studying this term. Not so long ago, it was proved that obese people gain a kind of protection, and the shape and dynamics of increasing waist circumference affect increases in body mass index and body shape index, which can be markers of obesity, subsequently increasing the life span of people with metabolic or other diseases. Most researchers assume that obese patients have a higher metabolic reserve, which can have a protective function in chronic diseases. Many scientists refute these theories and the obtained research results, as they run counter to generally accepted views, and therefore cause certain doubts. Many hypotheses have been given that can explain this phenomenon, but no one can give a 100 percent answer at this point in time.
