Brief summary

To date, the main treatment for colorectal cancer is surgical resection of the tumor, preceded or followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy, depending on the stage of the disease. Despite the fact that a number of preoperative preventive measures are taken to minimize the risks of postoperative infections and complications, they are not sufficient. For a long time, mechanical bowel cleansing has been used in combination with the prophylactic use of antibiotics. However, there is controversy regarding the effectiveness of this method, since it leads to a number of complications such as gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic disorders, etc. Modulation of the intestinal microflora with probiotics seems to be an effective method for reducing complications in surgical patients. Probiotics can maintain the balance of the microbiome after surgery by maintaining the integrity of the intestinal mucosa and reducing bacterial translocation. This review aims to evaluate the efficacy of pre-pro- and symbiotics in colorectal cancer surgery.

Key words
