Salukhov V.V., Romashevsky B.V.

S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy, Saint Petersburg, Russia

Brief summary

Diabetes mellitus is an irrespective risk for cognitive complications. The occurrence of the cognitive complications is related to acute and chronic hypergly-cemia, insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, diabetic ketoacidosis and episodes of hypoglyce-mia. In this article review the occurrence ways of cognitive complications are covered. They include the mix of cardiovascular pathology, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, mitochon-drial disfunction, apoptosis, the depression of neurotrophic factors, the activation of AChE, the modification of transmitters, the accumulation of amyloid ?В, tau phosphorylation and neu-rodegeneration. The variation of experimental and clinical research confirms the existence of common occurrence ways of diabetes mellitus and cognitive complications pathogenesis. This fact can allow the using of antidiabetic drugs in prevention and treatment of mentioned diseases. Here are the research results of antidiabetic drugs with neuroprotective effect to cogni-tive functions of persons with diabetes mellitus and neurodegenerative diseases.
