Brief summary

Presented data obtained to date, indicating the possibility of using an inert gas - helium in the treatment of respiratory diseases, circulatory system, rehabilitation of patients after hypothermia and physical exertion, including deep-sea diving, as well as anesthesia practice. Possible mechanisms of action of inert gases, presumably based on physical interaction with receptors through charge-induced dipole and Van der Waals interactions, are condemned. Despite the fact that the use of helium in clinical practice reduces the severity of cough and dyspnea, the number of asthma attacks, meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials has not demonstrated an improvement in survival, duration of inpatient treatment and the frequency of repeated hospitalizations in patients with bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. At the same time, there was a reduction in the duration of inpatient treatment with the additional use of helium in patients with pneumonia. The use of noble gases in patients with acute coronary syndrome, who underwent myocardial revascularization, directly correlated with survival. The article discusses the possibility of using helium in modern clinical practice, unsolved problems and prospects for further scientific studies of inert gase.

Key words

bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, ischemic preconditioning, inert gases, helium.
